How important is a business headshot to your online profile?

The Wall Street Journal reports that "LinkedIn profiles that include a photograph are seven times more likely to be viewed than those that don’t, according to company stats.

Busy business owners often question the need to have a great public relations portrait of themselves. But in today's incredibly connected and visual culture often the face of a business owner or key employee is the first impression potential customers will experience. When people take the initiative to look for products and services they want to know about the companies with which they are considering doing business. Most people browsing a website to research a purchase drill down into the site looking for clues that will tip their decision in one way or another. The more important or dear the purchase the deeper they will drill for visual and written information.

They are mostly looking for some sort of human connection that will resonate with them. A look, an attitude, a gesture or a genuine smile.

Customers want to connect with people. The images on your web site and your publicity materials can help you make that connection.

If you're in the central Illinois area, I'd be happy to help you market your business with better imagery. You can see some of my business portrait work here as well as a "behind the scenes" look at a recent session I did for a Bloomington, Illinois, restauranteur.

Behind the Session - John McDonnell, President of Biaggi's Restaurant :: Bloomington, Illinois, Headshot Photographer

Making headshots might seem like mundane or boring work--after all, you're just taking pictures of someone's face, right? How hard can that be?

Actually, I find it to be both fun and challenging.

Last week I received an email from John McDonnell, the president and chief operating officer of Biaggi's Restaurants. Biaggi's, which markets itself as a "casual Italian restaurant," began with one location in Bloomington, Illinois, in 1999 and now has 23 locations in 12 states. John is a founding partner of the business. (As an aside, my wife and I have eaten at the restaurant in Bloomington and recommend it highly--both the meals and the service have been excellent.)

In addition to his responsibilities for Biaggi's, John also speaks to a variety of student and business audiences about his experience. John contacted me because he wanted to update his photograph for these speaking events.

When we met at the studio, he told me that he'd never had a photograph of himself that he liked. Making headshots is easy, right? No pressure. Headshot photographer Peter Hurley says that his job is 10% photographer and 90% therapist--truth. I assured John that we'd make some flattering images that he would like.

Whenever I'm photographing someone, whether it's a business professional or a high school senior or a bride and groom, my first goal is to help them feel comfortable. If they don't trust me before we start shooting, they won't feel comfortable during the session. And if they don't feel comfortable, it will be harder to make good images. In most cases, then, sessions begin with conversation. I don't put my subject in front of the camera and start firing away. I also break up the session with periods of conversation and banter. Again, the goal is to help them feel less self-conscious. I have a much better chance of making photographs they'll enjoy if they feel comfortable.

Another benefit of this approach is that I get to learn people's stories. Everyone is interesting; you just need to ask questions and allow them to open up. This is what makes headshots fun for me.

I usually ask clients if they don't like the way they've been photographed in the past or if there is some feature about themselves that they feel self-conscious about. While this may seem too probing, it's important for me to know so I can avoid those things. In addition, I want them to understand that I'll do my best to make them look good. A good portrait results from a partnership between the subject and the photographer.

At John's session, I asked him about his business and his speaking. We talked about sports and our families. He says his approach to public speaking is simply telling stories and it was evident that he enjoys it. He was inquisitive as well, asking me about the equipment I used and why I was using it.

I used two different backgrounds and four different lighting approaches because I wanted to give John several options for poses and looks. In some instances, the light, expression, and pose were more "open" and "approachable." In others, I was going for a more "intense" or "serious" look.

Our session lasted just over an hour. John was easy to work with and, as you can see, we made some great portraits. When we wrapped up, I showed him a few of the images on the back of the camera and he was pleased. John selected a couple of the less serious images for his public speaking work, feeling those best represented him for that purpose.

My clients always receive their selections in both color and black & white. Personally, I love the simple look of black & white for a portrait or headshot. Below, though, are a couple of images from this session that worked better in color.

So that's how I do headshots. My thanks to John for letting me make his photographs. In the era of social networking when everybody's online, you are your own marketer and the images you use for your online profiles or other publicity materials create a critical first impression. Investing in a strong headshot makes good business sense.

As a technical/marketing aside, I asked John how he found me. He said that he Googled "headshot photographers in Bloomington" and my site's blog posts came up in the top three results. I give the nod to my hosting service, Squarespace (affiliate link). I ran my site on a self-hosted Wordpress blog for four years and could never get decent search engine rankings. In December 2010, I moved to Squarespace (mostly to avoid the hassle of having to constantly mess with the backend of Wordpress) and have seen my search engine rankings improve dramatically. I don't know what "secret sauce" Squarespace uses that I didn't have on my Wordpress site, but the difference is remarkable. If you're a photographer, speaker, creative, or small business owner who's looking for an all-in-one website+hosting solution that's easy to use, looks great and has the potential to get you good search engine results, you may find, like I have, that Sqaurespace is hard to beat.

Seth Goodman - Finalist in REALTOR Magazine's 30 Under 30

Lincoln realtor Seth Goodman, whose headshots I made last fall, entered REALTOR Magazine's "30 Under 30" contest at that same time. Hearts at Home began humbly 19 years ago when one mom, Jill Savage, began meeting with a few women to learn from and encourage one another in their roles as mothers. The National Conference now draws well-recognized speakers and teachers from across the country. This year's keynote speakers included Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar from the popular TLC TV program "19 Kids and Counting" and Dr. Juli Slattery, Family Psychologist at Focus on the Family. A number of workshops were available to help moms with all manner of parenting issues, finances, and relationships.

As one of the vey few men who gets an "insider's view" of the conference, I'm grateful that my wife attends each year. I know my own family benefits from what happens here and I often encourage other husbands to send their wives--it's a great investment!

We became aware of the poverty and desperate conditions magnified by the devastation. I've travelled to Haiti twice (spent three months there on one visit) and know first-hand that, on a good day, it's a mess of a place. Add a natural disaster and the challenges are grave.

A couple weeks ago, my friend Paul Del Valley called and asked if I could help with an event he was coordinating. Paul works with Northwest Haiti Christian Mission and organizes food packing events for Kids Against Hunger. Paul recruits churches who in turn recruit volunteers to pack meals that will be shipped to Haiti for hungry people there. The meals are basic but sustaining: rice, soy, dried vegetables, and vitamins that provide life-saving nourishment.

My son Liam and I met Paul and a couple hundred volunteers--moms, dads, kids, grandmas and grandpas, all ages from 3 to 95, by my best guess--at New Hope Christian Church near Indianapolis last weekend. Lincoln Christian University had also sent a group of students a week earlier to help prepare for the event. After a brief orientation, volunteers were set up on assembly lines to load, seal, and pack the food bags. Over the course of three, two-hour shifts, the volunteers packed over 110,000 meals--that's remarkable. Liam helped me photograph the first shift and then he packed on the second two shifts. We were grateful to have been a part of this effort that will help save the lives of our neighbors in the Caribbean.

The other week, I was profiled as the Lincoln & Logan County Chamber of Commerce Business of the Week and gave away a couple of headshot sessions as part of the fun. Jolie, a Lincoln resident, was the winner of one of those sessions and we made her photographs this week. She was terrific to work with and we made some lovely images. We also have some fun planned with Jolie and the winner of the second session--stay tuned for that.

Thanks to Jolie and again to the Chamber for enabling this to happen.

Many thanks to Jenye Tribler at the Chamber for the posts on their Facebook page, where they will choose a lucky winner for one of the headshot sessions I'm giving away.

A winner for the second free session will be selected from the folks who have "liked" the Michael Gowin Photography page on Facebook and then answered the question I've posted there today. You'll have until noon Monday, Feb 27, to enter and then I'll choose and announce a random winner that night.

With that, on to today's post:

Photographers don’t just take pictures; they’re often required to solve complicated problems to create beautiful images. When we made this bridal portrait of Nicole, it was 3:00 in the afternoon on a sunny day in August. The wrong approach in the harsh sun would have ruined the picture. Having photographed in this kind of light many times, I knew we could make a flattering and beautiful portrait by putting her back to the sun, bouncing a little bit of light onto her face with a reflector, and adjusting the camera’s exposure for the light falling directly on her cheek. The result was gorgeous.
